Tilawah Al-Quran, IIUM @ UIAM

Introduction

Reciting Al-Qur’an is a must for every Muslim. As a Muslim, the ability to recite Al-Qur’an is highly required. However, all the requirements will not be accomplished if the basics towards it are not tackled. There are many ahadith by the Prophet S.A.W concerning the advantages of reciting and learning Al-Qur’an. One of the hadith says:

“Recite Al-Qur’an, indeed it will give syafa’at (help) for those who recite it in the Day of Judgement.”

In another hadith, Prophet S.A.W also said:

“For those who want to converse with Allah S.A.W, read Al Qur’an.”

Tilawah Division which was formally known as Tilawah Unit was established in 1987 when the senate endorsed the proposal presented to start the unit within the Language Center. The establishment of the division is to comply with the Islamization of Knowledge as a mission and vision of IIUM.

The course is designed to suit all Muslim students to recite the Holy Quran in a correct manner. On the other hand, for the Arabic based student, the course is inadequate to prepare them to become an Islamic scholar.

All new students are required to sit for the Tilawah Placement Test (TPT) before following Tilawah courses. The TPT is regularly conducted at the beginning of each semester. From the TPT, students are divided into Exempted students, 2000 level and 1000 level students.

All students for both Gombak and Kuantan campus need to complete their Tilawah requirements within the first two years of their studies when compulsory registration is fulfilled. However students from IRK and BARB are automaticly placed in 3000 levels where they are required to complete three subjects of Tilawah Divison courses.

From the Tilawah course students are guided through a process of learning and practicing the rules of tajwid in the recitation of the Holy Quran. The main teaching approach is teaching and learning centered. Thus, students are assisted in developing their proficiency on reading the Holy Quran through the following learning strategies: imitating, practicing and memorizing. To sum up, students will learn the rules of tajwid in detail from the explanation of the instructors. So, students will be requested to apply those rules in recitation spontaneously.
